Oscars 2020 Red Carpet: All The Fashion, Dresses & Outfits - Vogue

Awards season is officially drawing to a close with the 2020 Oscars this evening. The biggest ceremony of the year, now in its 92nd year, is once again being held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. Your favorite A-list nominees will all be attendance, in the hopes of taking home one of the industry's highest honors: that iconic golden trophy. Expect to see megawatt celebs who have been sweeping awards all month long, whether it be Renée Zellweger (Judy) or Joaquin Phoenix (Joker), the two stars most hotly tipped to win the best actor categories this year. Even better yet, classic Hollywood glamour will also be taking over the red carpet before the ceremony. The Oscars are one of the most-watched red carpets in the world, after all—meaning the stakes are high for stars to bring their fashion A-game.

Past shows have created some of the most memorable gowns in La La Land history; take Halle Berry's showstopping Elie Saab creation in 2002, or Jennifer Lawrence's 2013 Christian Dior gown, which had a train so epic she infamously tripped on it. Tonight, perhaps vintage dresses will make an appearance, following past award show mandates this month, such as the BAFTAs, that have enforced a more eco-conscious dress code. Whatever the offering may be, one thing is for certain: The dazzling evening looks tonight are surely going to be the talk of the water cooler tomorrow, so be sure to follow Vogue's real-time updates of the step and repeat, and you won't miss a thing.

Jane Fonda Made a Powerful Statement With Her 2020 Oscars Dress and Coat - GoodHousekeeping.com

  • Grace and Frankie star Jane Fonda attended the 2020 Oscars in a red Elie Saab gown and a red coat.
  • Jane originally wore the red dress to Cannes in 2014, and the red coat is "the last article of clothing" she will ever buy.
  • The 82-year-old actress consciously pulled together her Academy Awards outfit to make a statement about climate change and fashion.

Jane Fonda knows how to make a fashion statement.

The Grace and Frankie star looked stunning while presenting the award for Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars, and she made every single detail of her outfit count. The 82-year-old actress stepped onto the stage at the 92nd Academy Awards in a ruby red, beaded Elie Saab gown with a red coat and a gray pixie haircut.

As part of her fight against climate change, Jane chose to wear the long-sleeve, open back dress for a second time after originally debuting it at the 67th International Cannes Film Festival in 2014.

The activist also added a simple, yet powerful touch with her now-famous red coat. Back in November, she declared it was "the last article of clothing" she would ever buy.

"When I talk to people and say, 'We don't really need to keep shopping. We shouldn't look to shopping for our identity. We don't need more stuff,' I have to walk the talk," she said on Capitol Hill. "So I'm not buying any more clothes." Since then, the coat has accompanied her to a handful of protests and subsequently, to jail.

And to pack the final punch, the former fitness guru traded in her signature blonde bob for a silver pixie cut. She was also considerate about donning Pomellato jewelry "because it only uses responsible, ethically harvested gold and sustainable diamonds."

Fans watching the 2020 Oscars from home applauded Jane for speaking her mind wherever she goes.

"So beautiful and true to her beliefs! Thanks for standing up for our Earth!" one person wrote on Instagram. "YES our environmentally conscious queen," another added. "You look so powerful in that dress ❤️😍" a fan commented.

We can all agree that Jane made a strong point for sustainable fashion. Now, it's time to look through our own wardrobes and give life to an outfit we haven't worn in a while.

A national, non-profit organization, Becca's Closet collects and distributes formal dresses to high school girls who cannot afford to purchase them - and the dresses are offered at no cost.

With high school prom season just around the corner, and prom dresses costing hundreds of dollars at some shops, it is good to know that there are places where girls can get a great dress for less. Or even free.

Becca's Closet

Becca's Closet is a national program that collects and distributes free prom dresses for high school girls who need them. Every spring the local Fairview chapter matches up dozens of girls with dream dresses during the prom season

This spring there are more than 2,000 dresses in a wide range of sizes, according to  Becca's Closet organizer Jamie Gillette.

The nonprofit has already outfitted a number of girls, including four refugee girls from Nashville World Outreach Partnership, with "perfect" dresses, according to Rebekah Pope, who works with the refugees.

"For many of the refugee students at Nashville World Outreach Partnership, prom is unattainable due to very limited financial means. Thanks to Becca's Closet, NWOP was able to take four pretty refugee girls prom dress shopping. The girls were able to choose and receive a dress for free," she said.

The program works on an honor system — you just say you need a dress — and you can make an appointment to go see the inventory. Girls need to bring a high school ID to their appointment. For an appointment or to get information on the program or on donating dresses, shoes, jewelry, etc., email gownsforgirls@comcast.net.

LUXE Prom Dress Consignment

Shannon Bone has organized a consignment prom dress sale with about 100 to 125 dresses and prices ranging from $75 to $350 for designer brands, including Jovani, Mori Lee, Sherri Hill and Ellie Wilde.

The consignment take-in is Feb. 12-16. Consignors price their own dresses and receive 70% of the sale price. The public sale is Feb. 27 through March 1 at 234 Old Columbia Road in Dickson.

"Girls spend a ridiculous amount on designer prom dresses today (think $350-$800), so I wanted to provide a way for girls to come and shop designer gowns that are 1 to 2 years old, current styles and designer brands from all over Middle Tennessee," Bone said.

Details: Follow LUXE Prom Dress Consignment pop-up event on Facebook.

Goodwill gown sale

Goodwill's Midstate stores almost all have some prom wear in stock with prices starting at $7.99.

But the big annual gown sale is March 14 at the Rivergate Goodwill store, 2101 Gallatin Pike North in Madison. More than 700 wedding gowns and dozens of prom and bridesmaid gowns will be sold at bargain prices.

Wedding gowns will be priced from $49.99 to $399.99. Bridesmaid and prom dresses will range from $19.99 to $49.99. A selection of jewelry also will be available.

More details will be available closer to the sale at giveit2goodwill.org.

Consignment sales and thrift stores

Many of the spring/summer children's consignment sales include some prom wear. Encores South's pop-up sale Feb. 27 through March 1 is expected to include 40 to 50 prom-worthy dresses.

And most thrift shops, including This 'N That, Dickson Help Center, GraceWorks, ThriftSmart and Our Thrift, have a selection of prom gowns this time of year.

Places to donate prom dresses

Becca's Closet welcomes donated prom dresses, shoes and accessories to give to high school girls who cannot afford a dress. Details: email gownsforgirls@comcast.net

Camp Okawehna, which is a weeklong summer camp for children 6-18 with kidney disease, has a prom night during the camp and always welcomes donated prom wear for the campers. For donations or more information, call 615-327-3061.

Most thrift stores welcome donated dresses and accessories.
