Nonprofit provides clothing for elementary school students - WJXT News4JAX Posted: 27 Feb 2020 02:33 AM PST GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. – A local non-profit is teaming up with a school in Green Cove Springs to make sure students have access to clothes that are in good condition. Friends of Augusta Savage recently opened "Augusta's Closet" at Bennett Elementary School. Augusta Savage was an African American sculptor from Clay County. The non-profit named after her aims to improve the community through health, education and the arts. "We want to inspire. We start by helping them dress and feel well," Henrietta Francis, President of Friends of Augusta Savage said. While the organization was visiting the elementary school to discuss one of their programs, they noticed a big need for clothes for students. "From my understanding, of the 600 students here, whether or not they take advantage of it, do qualify for free or reduced lunch so that should give you some idea," said Francis about the need. Augusta's Closet is on the schools' property. It is full of gently used clothes for both girls and boys, ranging from shirts and coats to shoes and undergarments. "It's hard to study, it's hard to feel apart, it's hard to have any type of self-esteem if you wear your brother's shoes or if you wear your shoes two or three times in a row, it's hard to do that," Francis said. As the school year continues, Francis said she hopes the closet will help students feel confident and know that people in the community care. Students can visit the closet with their teachers during the school week. Anyone who wants to donate can drop gently used items off at the school's main office Copyright 2020 by WJXT News4Jax - All rights reserved. About the Author: |
Back-to-back CIF titles for Poway girls - The San Diego Union-Tribune Posted: 26 Feb 2020 02:03 PM PST For the second consecutive season, Poway High girls water polo coach Crystal Patterson was totally unprepared for the San Diego Section championships. Patterson forgot about the tradition of throwing the winning coach into the pool after claiming a title. Fortunately, this time her husband remembered to bring an extra set of clothes to the finals last Saturday at La Jolla High. Patterson, along with all her players, took another dip into the pool after the top-seeded Titans captured the Division I championship with a 16-11 win over Westview. Advertisement "Last year my clothes got super heavy and I was exhausted after I got out of the pool,'' Patterson said. "The girls were hanging all over me and they threw me into the pool right onto one of the lane lines.'' This time, at least Patterson had dry clothes to change into after accepting the trophy to go with last year's Division II trophy. "The girls kind of set the tone in the finals,'' Patterson said. "We have been playing together for a few years and they went from just having fun in the pool to having a passion for water polo. Our expectations were so much higher this year. We were all on the same page. For us to win back-to-back titles leaves me speechless.'' Poway, now 20-8, continues its postseason Friday when the No. 6-seeded Titans face No. 3 Fullerton Rosary Academy (25-7) at 4:20 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Southern California Championships at Santa Ana Segerstrom High. Advertisement Del Norte (19-4), seeded No. 5, also earned a Division II berth and will play No. 4 Riverside King (15-5) 3:10 p.m.Friday. The winners advance to Saturday's semifinals at the same pool with Poway playing the winner of the Whittier Selma-San Clemente game in the morning and Del Norte playing the winner of the Cathedral Catholic-Whittier California winner. The championship game is also Saturday afternoon. "I thought before the season we could be in the Open Division, make the top eight in the county,'' Patterson said. "But we wound up being the top seed in Division I, so we decided to finish it off the right way. "After losing in the first round twice (2017 and 2018), we won CIF last year and again this year. Teams like Bishop's, Cathedral and Carlsbad are on a different level than the rest of us, but we're doing pretty well too.'' Poway, last year's section Division II champion as well as the SoCal Division III champion, needed a second-half run to take this year's section title away from Westview. The Titans scored five of the game's final six goals to claim the back-to-back crowns. Senior Grace Kellerman led the charge with five goals while junior Campbell Hakim had three goals, including two on penalty shots, and junior Emelia Peterson added three goals. Advertisement Sophomore Lexi Burg and freshman Nalani Galindo both scored twice. Freshman Harper Hakim added one goal. Poway's senior goalie Mya Davis needed to make just three saves. "I've been on the top of the world since Saturday,'' said Kellerman, who will not play water polo in college at Notre Dame in the fall. "My friends over at (Rancho Bernardo) told me the finals would be my last game ever so I should have as much fun as possible. I texted her immediately after the game to tell her the season was not over and I expected her to be at our next playoff game. With 30 seconds left in the finals, it finally hit me. Back-to-back is great.'' Poway's championship banner from 2019 just arrived at school a few weeks ago and has not been raised in the gym yet. But all the players signed the back of the first banner. "Coach told us last year that no one will feel what you're feeling right now,'' Kellerman said. "She said winning CIF was one special moment. Now we've had two of those special moments.'' And the Titans have the banners to prove it. |
