*My 300th post! I cannot believe I have allowed this blog to overtake my life as it has. I love every second. Hope you will keep coming back for more.
The dark pop, "Wonderland" songstress has returned with a new fierce single after the disappointing commercial reception to her debut album in 2011. While songs such as "Broke", "Break You Hard" and "Love is a Suicide" were amazing, they did not seem to catch on. "Problem", the lead single off her upcoming album Controversy is different than Natalia Kills' previous releases. Instead of the Europop influences or heartbreaking lyrics, Kills give her fans a song that tells all potential suitors to beware of the her fangs and feisty attitude. The song leans more towards the rock and R&B genres than it does the pop sound we are used to hearing from Kills, but she has never been one to do the expected, so we shouldn't be too surprised that she is changing things up once again. Following the buzzworthy title track, the new song seems to be getting her devoted fans ready for what is about to come next from one of the most unique artists out there today.
Now in 2013, dusting off the past setbacks, "Problem" embodies an empowering vibe and new sound that was not present on Kills' first record. Produced by frequent collaborator Jeff Bhasker, the new track is one that will surely divide fans and critics. The artist knows that all the boys want her, I mean who wouldn't she is absolutely gorgeous, but she is quick to sing, "I'm your dream girl, This is real love, But you know what they say about me, That girl is a problem", as a flashing red warning sign for any boy who wants to get close. Kills is a maneater, there's no denying that fact, and that is what the song's underlying message is. Accompanied by a loud siren of a beat, I personally felt there was too much going on in terms of background production that focus wasn't always on the artist's strong vocals.
I like the new song in pieces, but as a whole, it just does not stand up to anything she has released before. The single is not bad, it is actually pretty good and I have hit the play button many times already, but after waiting two years, hearing her awesome collaboration with Far East Movement and taking the buzz she has been building into consideration, "Problem" becomes a problem for all the wrong reasons. It's a nice listen, I commend the change in sound and direction, I was just hoping for something a little different. Kills is one of my favorite artists to watch, her upcoming album is one of my most anticipated of the year, I just hope she hasn't completely forgotten the pop flavor that dominated "Mirrors" and "Free". Take a listen to her new single below and be sure to buy your copy on 3/12!
